    Wayne Coyne!
Singer of Flaming Lips, Wayne... he introduced himself to me and E.!
    Supernice guy! HOly crap!
I told him how nice it was when he touched me almost 2 years ago.

He said, "Now doesnt that feel good to get out of you. Wasn't that easy? What's your name?"
Make introductions... supernice. Wow. Best ever. EVER.

Saw the Rapture Monday... was 10x better than last time I saw them... AND IT WAS FREE> nice free comps floating around.

TODAY: two interviews. One with a woman in New Mexico. One with one of my current profs.
Finally got one of those minirecorders

    Did I just meet Jandek?
So a week ago I get a phone call from one of those TTTY or whatever relays that have an operator communicate between you and someone typing somewhere.
He says its Jandek, and he wants to hand deliver his new album for me to play on the radio. Asks me if I'll play it on the radio. I don't know what to make of it, but I agree...

Go to the designated place at designated time. Its this circle of bushes under trees. Very secluded, very in-the-dark. but right by the radio station.
He is waiting there... a man with a full trenchcoat on, gloves, hat, and a SCARF wrapped around his head. Basically, especially since we were in the dark, couldnt see anything distinguishing.

    I say "who is that?"
he says: "Its Jandek. Are you Seth?"
    I say "yes."

He hands me the CD and walks away...

    Been a long time...
Alright... been a LONG time... what's new.

    PAST:
Was in St. Louis, Madison and New York since I last updated this.
    Great great great times.

Eric had his going away party this weekend. Was a blast. Went to house-wrecking party next night (house is getting demolished so we'd make their job easier.)
Things went horribly wrong and I almost got killed, will post with that story in a bit.

    FUTURE:
This summer in Prague for a bit then I'm backpacking through the rest of Europe.
Then back to Chicago for a few weeks.
Then to New York to work at a magazine (hopefully a good one)

Am getting super,super-jazzed about this one thing I'm writing... could be good... could be real good.

Also... got weirdest phone call of my life Sunday. If it is what it I think it might be, one of the most bizarre and unique things ever could be happening soon.
DOn't want to jump the gun on this one though...

    yep
Last minute trip to Madison, WI with brother last night. Just got back. Some party at N.'s place there. Was wicked, saw lots of people.

Back in town already. St. Louis Thursday

    Things are alright
Was in NYC last weekend... why? because I could.
    had a blast.
Did the Arlene's Grocery thing Monday night and it blew my brains out. I had one of the best times ever. Stayed at B.'s and C.'s place while there. Good times.

That city is quite... dirty. After one night bumming around and then sleeping on a couch, I felt like I could virtually peel the slime off me.

Tonight I was at the Midwest Premiere of "Toxic Avenger 4". That movie was ridiculous. I laughed a million.5 times. Met Troma creator/director Lloyd Kaufman, who I had interviewed via email last week. Was ridiculously friendly and talkative, even when in a dark room alone with no prying eyes of the public to judge.

My editor got arrested at the protests yesterday. Spent the night in jail I think. She left me a message: "If you go to the protests, don't get arrested. and if you do, don't take any of their bullshit."

Needless to say, I went to the protests today. Was kinda scared the bridges wouldnt hold the weight of 10,000 hippies, but it held.

Going to St. Louis next Thursday through the the weekend.

The Onion keeps running my picture, this time with different text.

A pretty true-to-note description of saturday night.

Last friday some guy got stabbed at this party I was at. Some bands were playing in a basement with ceiling less than 6 feet high. Our heads hit the pipes. It was ridiculously crowded and apparantly some guy got stabbed. I didn't see or hear anything while there.
    12:10 pm
Some girl asked me to sign her copy of the Onion in the dining hall the other day, that was creepy.

Get to interview Troma films maven/director Lloyd Kaufman in next couple days

    Livin' the dream!
    RIght!

The Onion for this week... the Chicago print edition... page 35.
Someone thought it'd be a good idea to make me the new poster child for the Onion. Kinda scary that they used that picture of me. But I'd be lieing if I said I didn't love it.

VEEDEE was on my radio show today and played a killer hour-long set. they have good things coming. Scored a ride home, went to some party where everyone's here, Bobby Conn, played. It... was... spellbinding. We shared this one moment, he was standing on the amp and he looked at me mouthing the words to all his songs and he just broke down laughing. He lost the cool and composure that he had managed to hold an ironclad grip on. He leaned on me and put the mic in front of me and for that one moment, our falsettos were one as we belted out the words to "whores". it was beautiful.

    hah!
    Wow.
Saw Ted Nugent speak last night. worked a crowd of Young Republicans (capitalized) into a fevered frenzy dishing on everyone that wasnt a christian male. it was amazing.

and Damo Suzuki, former singer of CAN (oh yes!) just saw him do a private show at WNUR and met him. it was so intense, right up in my face. wow. i complimented his watch

Kill the body and the head will die...
long day. one of those where halfway through you're gonna collapse from exhaustion... but become ridiculously wide awake a few hours later out of pure necessity.

saw the MC5 movie again. was great, super fun. one of those ridiculous experiences where theres 100 people, you know 40 of them, and you recognize 30 more.
the director actually remembered my name; which is remarkable.
apparantly some 250 people were turned away because the screening was filled. craziness, but makes me feel lucky.

went to karaoke after. an old friend who i hadn't seen since the summer showed up and made it super-fun. scored a ride home but it involved a detour to a diner where i shirked my head in embarrassment as i was sitting smack in the middle of a table of 4 other people who were talking at a ridiculously unnecessary decibal level. i hate being part of 'that guy,' i really do.

    I got a secret formula...
    Let's see...

I've been watching "Joe Millionaire" so I can have something to talk to people at the office with. Its kinda irritating have absolutely no pop culture reference points. I view watching shows like that as part of the job - its work, not fun. "Water cooler" chat fodder.
Though, I'd be lieing if I said I'm not riveted by the whole idea of it.

Eric cooked spaghetti for us at his place after work yesterday, which was great. Going back home in the snow storm was not so great.

Met Samantha Power yesterday, author of "A Problem From Hell" which is basically about the messed-up US response to genocide over the years. She had that high-powered burned-out look to her that I should fully embrace within a few years. Lucky us.

    Oh my golly.
An informercial is on for seminars from this motivational speaker named Tony Robbins.
This guy is so amazing. The ad just cuts to him doing summersaults and high-five and flying around arenas on cables and smiling big and getting the crowd going.
His program is called "Get the Edge": "Guaranteed to improve every area of your life in only seven days."
They show some real estate agent who succeeded because of him, and then some woman who lost weight because of him.
He's one of those guys who makes really really exaggerated hand movements when he talks. I need to start doing that.

    back to the stone age...
    what a weird freakin' night.

Back to the Stone Age did our thing again.
For some strange reason we headlined, and I snagged some really super full-color glossy posters that someone made promoting the show.

Musically, it was a disaster. But i'd be lieing if I didn't expect and hope for it. There's no way what I do could possibly work, and so it works wondefully in its own way.

There were way more people then I ever expected in my wildest dreams to show up. There must have been 200 people there. The place was packed, and its not that small a place.

More pictures to come, the only one I have now shows the crowd concensus of our show.

    25% Approve
    50% Disapprove
    25% Are indifferent

    best mood ever.
its like sitting on the El platform and thinking "things can't get better" and then the train comes and I don't have to wait.

its like doing amazing karaoke and thinking "things can't get better" and someone offers me a ride home.

it's like waking up and thinking "things can't better" and getting a call from the Onion saying they want to hire me.

    All this and more.

Had my job interview with the Onion today.
I don't think there's a single person who tries to get into journalism these days without dreams of working for the Onion.

I think my interview went well. When I got the call Saturday morning I nearly died of shock and surprise.
    ...

Oh, and Back to the Stone Age is this Saturday!
    @ the Mutiny.

    It's not like I didn't exist
I promised myself that I would never turn this into a spewing forum of emotional bullshit, and I'm going to do my best to hold myself to it.

The weirdest things are making everything make sense.
Like listening to Jandek for 4 straight hours a night for 3 consecutive nights (courtesy the Harvard radio station webcast).
When you are in that deep, even Jandek begins to make sense. And if Jandek can make sense, anything can.

-the Wonderful and Goofy McClory liked my article on taking the El from Howard to 95th and back.

-Back To The Stone Age: we are having another reunion. This one is going to be the biggest band I have ever conjured up in the dark recesses of my mind. And our first show since August. Its at the Mutiny on Feb 1, so come: its free.

-Saw Al Franken speak tonight. Harold Ramis was there, and I met him. Both seemed ridiculously personable and friendly; which is always great.
    ----

Back to Jandek, since I can't seem to get him out of my mind.
Kurt Cobain once (semi-)famously said that Jandek isn't pretentious, people who listen to Jandek are.
And the thing is, I would have agreed with him only a few months ago.
But diving in head first, without turning back can completely change your perspective on something like this. Its not just the enigma and mythology associated with him that draws me in (though it certainly helps.)
Its gotten to the point where I willfully and knowingly listen to Jandek because it gets inside me. In its odd way; its the most painfully engrossing thing I've ever heard.

    Whats up dudes?
    Weirdness.
Haven't done this in forever. blah.

    Alright... so here's the low-down...

Doing alright, things are smooth, no harshness.

Back to the Stone Age is having our reunion show.
Every show BTTSA does is a reunion show.
----February 1, @the Mutiny, on Western just North of Fullerton in Chicago. Show is like 10 or so, but we are last band on, so not till at least midnight.

Am assembling the biggest and best BTTSA line-up yet for this gig. Will be a nuthouse.

Was at Nevin's last night and there was a giant poster with my (and Ed, Eric, and Scotch's) picture on it. Interesting since I've NEVER been to Nevin's.

So Jenn and I are probably going to live together next fall. Will be fun times. She'll be like: "dude!" and I'll be like "what's up?"

    Tonight: Karaoke @Underground Lounge.

    ...
Went to Mickey's tonight because one of the karaoke bands was gonna be there. Apparantly the place was shut down the past month due to some liquor violation or something, so absolutely no one was there. Metal-grunge dude Hudson was there, and I was, and the owners of the place, and the the employees, and no one else. I got to sing like 10 sings. The owner and Hudson both bought me beer, and Angela showed up and told me made a 5,000 dollar bet that shant be mentioned.

Finished tests and slept till 7 pm today. It was an epic rest; I slept the sleep of Napoleon after Waterloo.

I can't find a grocery store in Chicago that carries Halavah. Maybe one of those fancy health or 'natural' food stores will. I haven't tasted the stuff in a year and a half, and suddenly I've been struck with the most ridiculous craving for it. Funny how you can crave something when you've basically forgotten what it tastes like.

Oh, and I head to DC on Saturday. I'm curious to see how this'll be.

My new weekly column debuted last week in citylink. Pick it up from the free boxes at Blue Line stops: Division, Damen, Western, California, and Logan Square stops.

and my new dogs look like Gizmo from Gremlins.

Going over and finding my friend in bed, wounded from an unprovoked attack by a gang of 15 or more kids who threw rocks at her and punched her.

    Makes me angry.

Maybe Justin's idea of starting a vigilante justice crew isn't such a bad one after all.
